Föreningen Nordbi
The Society for the Promotion of the Dark Honey Bee in Sweden
This society was established in year 1997, thanks to the pioneering efforts to protect the dark honey bee decades before. The SICAMM honorary member, Ingvar Arvidsson, managed to secure funds from the WWF in year 1990 to establish both a dedicated team as well as a conservation project (Nordbiprojektet) to save the dark honey bee (in Sweden, also called the Nordic Bee). Since then, the interest in protecting the dark honey bee in Sweden has grown steadily, and more geographically areas are constantly established for the dark honey bee for beekeeping and/or for breeding stations. Today, the society has members in many parts of Sweden as well as in other countries.
The society organizes different kinds of activities, such as breeding stations, distribution of bee queens (within Sweden as well as for other countries), lectures and courses on relevant topics for beekeepers, participation at fairs, collaboration with scientists, publish the magazine Nordbiaktuellt, issue labels for honey jars, and a biennial conference that is well visited also by members from neighbouring countries.
Sweden has been an active contributor to SICAMM from the early beginning. Apart from Ingvar Arvidsson, other very engaging members have been Josef Stark (former SICAMM president) and Per Thuman (SICAMM vice president and SICAMM honorary member).
