What we do

At SICAMM, we are dedicated to the conservation and protection of the European dark honey bee (Apis mellifera mellifera). Working alongside scientists, beekeepers, conservationists, and community groups, we take action to secure the future of this unique and threatened subspecies.

Conservation and Protection

We support initiatives that safeguard wild and managed populations of the European dark honey bee. This includes establishing conservation areas, protecting genetic diversity, and encouraging sustainable beekeeping practices that respect local adaptation.

Research and Science

Through our Science Board and partnerships with leading experts, we monitor the health, genetics, and resilience of Apis mellifera mellifera. We share research findings widely and encourage practical, evidence-based approaches to help local populations thrive in the face of climate change, disease, and environmental pressures.

Policy and Advocacy

SICAMM works at both European and national levels to raise awareness of the importance of protecting native bees. We advocate for policies that reduce the risks of disease and genetic dilution, including calls for restrictions on the import of non-native subspecies.

Community and Knowledge Sharing

We connect a vibrant international network of beekeepers, scientists, and enthusiasts. Our biennial in-person conferences provide a platform to share the latest research, successful practices, and conservation strategies. Between conferences, we continue to exchange knowledge, resources, and inspiration through our member organisations.

Get Involved

Membership of SICAMM is open to individuals and organisations who share our mission. By joining, you can:

  • Support conservation projects and initiatives

  • Take part in research and citizen science
